Why is this coming up? Well today I had a 3000y swim session planned. I went to the gym and looked into the pool and it was empty. Great sight considering the start of the new year. I changed quickly and headed to the pool. Looking through my sandwich bag at my training session I noticed that the last 5x100 were to be done with breathing every 3 strokes. I am a breathe to one side on each stroke kind of guy so this was going to be a test.
Well, what is life if we don't continually test ourselves right? I took that in stride and decided to add in flip turns. Flip turns and I are like oil and water....we don't go well together. I have had the theory that I won't be flipping in the open water so why learn right. Well, Allison posted about that same thing just recently and Patrick and Kovas chimed in with rational reasons as to why we should do flip turns.
(BTW - Patrick has a site called Endurance Athletes Project that you need to go to after you finish reading this. Or go to the Facebook page.)
Anyway with that in mind I decided I was going to do flip-turns today. I did my 300y warm-up and wasn't ready so I didn't do one. I had a 300y swim that was 150y RT/LT and 150 swim and I decided that here is when I was going to do my first. My first, as they say, will never be forgotten. I went over and saw the sky, the floor, the top of the water, the lane marker, the rush of water up my nose and my hand on the bottom of the pool. If that wasn't enough I felt the pain in my foot from smacking the wall. Epic failure. It was at that point that I chose to not fail again. I decided that I wasn't going to do it in the shorter end if I had touched the bottom of the deeper end. Safety here.
I flipped, and I flopped but I did not fall down. I flipped again and again and again. Sometimes great, sometimes not so great. I was swallowing water, I was having water flush up my nose but I was not going to quit. There is no can't in my vocabulary.
It was now time for the 5x100 with breathing every 3 strokes. I went through it in my mind during my 1 minute rest interval. I was nervous about the breathing because I would have my face buried for longer than normal but again I was not going to not try. If I couldn't do it then so be it but it would not be from a lack of effort.
Here we go: breathe, 3 strokes, breathe, 3 strokes, breathe......here comes the wall.....flip turn and back...breathe, 3 strokes, breathe and on this went for the 500 yards.
What a huge success and with each stroke I gained more and more confidence. With each flip I got stronger and stronger in my mind that I could do it.
SUCCESS
That was until I was getting changed to go to the gym for a strength and core session. As I was changing.....here came the pool. Flooding out of my nose at a pace that the Colorado River would be jealous of. It was just flowing like a river.
I did not keep me down though because for crying out loud I flip turned and breathed every three strokes.

AWESOME!!! You flipped turned AND you had the end result of a neti pot without having to actually use the neti-pot!
Love this post - seriously it's on my list of favs
Ned. Ned. Love that. Don't be jealous of Ned. He's just a tool so she can be more present with you.
OK, for the first 3/4 of the post I found myself wondering: how the hell is he going to work in the Neti pot? Then it became clear. Colorado River and all. You could have made it any river: the Thames, the Rio Grande. But you made it the Colorado and I'm taking that as a compliment.
Nice flip turns. I still don't know how to do them. Nice breathing technique too. I guess when you have a coach you get better at things. I should try that sometime.
Keep doing flip turns and keep doing bilateral breathing. Both will make you a better swimmer. I'll duel any of you lazy assed not-wanting-to-do-flip-turns triathletes with a water noodle who say otherwise!!! And 1-min rest between intervals? Are they still called "intervals" with that much time in between?
Hmmm. Never used a neti-pot. Maybe I should. Or at least I should try your moves in the pool :)
Awesome job! I have a neti and use it once in a while...
I can't flip turn. I always figured that I am not going to do it in a race and that since my pool time is so limited, I should make the most of that time swimming. I get how it is beneficial for sure, and that it will help keep a constant swim going instead of a weeny break in the open turn...so I GET why I should learn, but I just haven't yet. I DO bilateral breath though and think it is key...
Once I learned how to breath bilaterally I can't go back. I tried the last time I was in the pool and nope, didn't happen. One day I will learn how to flip turn. I wonder if the neti pot would help with my stuffy/runny nose issues since I quit smoking. I may have to try it.
The pool I have access to right now is so small that even if I were good at flip turns, the push off from the wall would take me over halfway to the next wall. My workout would be a series of flip turns! Oh, well - at least I'm in the pool, right?
For water going up your nose during flip turns, here is an EASY fix. Scrunch your upper lip up against your nostrils. Now breath out quickly through your nose. This simple action will keep the water from going up your nose while flipping.
Good luck!
Sounds like another 2011 day of success!
Jon - Thanks for the tip. I will definitely be trying that tomorrow. It certainly got much better but every little bit helps.
SUAR - Of course it is an ode to you. Who else? That SUAR lady said that I should move to Colorado and that is where the river is right?
I
totally
neti-pot.
so gross but so great. ;)
I love that she calls it Ned..ha ha! Like Beth, I was wondering how you were going to work in the neti-pot too!
I think it's awesome that you tried to do flip turns! I used to know how to do them, and now they just scare the heck out of me! I am worried about them for all the reasons that happened to you when you did them! But, I am going to give them a try soon enough! Hopefully I won't have the neti-pot experience afterwards though! :)
this has happened to me more than once... the neti nose post swim... still no real success w/ the flip turns.
neti pots gross me out. you pour in one nostril and out the other? too weird for me... lol

Nothing like hearing from 'fans' so....let's hear it. The good, the bad and the ugly.
